The Beginning of the End of T-shirt Culture

Has t-shirt culture become so mainstream that we enthusiasts will need to find a new untrammeled outlet for their creativity?

Frightening headlines aside, it's actually nice to see someone with cultural influence like the director of exhibitions at the Art Institute of Boston, Andrew Mroczek, promoting the t-shirt as canvas. We've often advocated for framing t-shirt designs you absolutely love, but wouldn't love to wear.

What we really like about the exhibition, though, is that Mroczek and artists like Ben Colebrook challenge t-shirt aficionados to consider the iconic role of the t-shirt in human -especially military- history.

In speaking of Colebrook's hand-numbered t-shirts which indicate weekly death tolls in Iraq, Mroczek observes:
"He's not only looking at the T-shirt as a canvas, but the tees themselves represent a series of bodies, so there's an additional conceptional component there. I think the impact of the shirts could be overlooked individually. But when you see them grouped together, and see the numbers rise, it's very powerful."

What's Free At Amazon?

Digital downloads are where it's at when it comes to free stuff on Amazon. Although the digital video offerings aren't so hot, they're still free and gratis is always alright with us -- especially when you don't have to deal with any rebates or oversized boxes.

Their free music, on the other hand, is pretty awesome with over 500 currently available songs. I'm sure you'll see plenty of names you don't recognize, but there are also some goodies in there as well. It's nice to play the preview versions even just to hear "what the kids are listening to these days."

The motherload of free stuff, if you're running a Windows machine, are the three free games they have for download through February 10th to celebrate the launch of their videogame download store.

I've opened and scratched the surface of Build-a-lot but didn't find it to be much fun, especially in these realty-challenged times. But what does my opinion count compared to the nine people who gave it an average 3.75 stars?

If you like point and click mystery clue games, you could certainly do worse than the good-looking The Scruffs game.

These days it's hard to find fault with some sort of precious stone matching game...and number two has got to be better than number one, right? That's why I'll probably agree that Jewel Quest 2 is the (pun intended) gem of this completely free bunch.

Snarky humor abounds at the almost-but-not-quite generic humor t-shirt site Crooked Monkey. On first glance, it looks like they're selling variants of all the same t-shirts you've seen at various humor tee sites around the Internet, but when taking a little time to dig deeper, you see that many of their ideas are unique in some way.

It looks like they're hometown is blanketed in snow at the moment and, in a fit of boredom or just snow-crazed insanity, have decided to hit the 20% off button the master controls. We believe the discount only lasts today, but they may forget to reset the controls when they finally make it through the snowpack.

The End Of Hell As We Know It

Apparently the rumors -- that we didn't hear -- are true. T-shirt Hell is closing up shop in a few weeks on February 10th. They claim they're doing it because they're sick of the whining sissy-pants, but we find that a hard pill so swallow. We've been getting the newsletter for years, just to see whose buttons they were going to push week after week.

For the past few weeks (or possibly months) their shirts have failed to impress, barely rising above mediocrity. Rather than seeing them trying to tone down their cutting sarcasm it looks more like they've just run out of steam.

Fortunately for us, not only is everything 10% off their final two weeks...they've also re-released a bunch of "worse than hell" t-shirts as a final fuck you.

So the title of their article is a little crass but some of these insights are likely new to any but the most cost-conscious consumer. Nathan Birch at Cracked has written a great expose on the things that five common businesses do to trick you out of your money:

Bars keep the music loud so you drink instead of talk.

Grocery stores are designed to make movement as slow as possible. Skip the cart and just carry the basket to speed your way around.

Restaurants have all sorts of diabolical tricks, including weighted silverware and extruded plates to make your portion appear bigger.

The Mall is not your friend, unless you're trying to get extra exercise -- which you should be as it's never a bad thing and you can then look better in your myriad t-shirts -- they put like stores across the building from each other to ensure you have to pass by everything else on your way.

While we all know that casinos pump up the oxygen to keep you happy and high, who knew that their gaudy floors and low-hanging canopies were designed to keep your focus on the machines and tables?

Best Pictures of 2008

You know...we can only speak for the American attention span, but it seems that our memories get shorter and shorter every...wait, what was I saying there?

Anyway. If you're ready to look back on or just want to remember the sometimes scary year that was 2008, we highly recommend you do so the easy way -- visually -- with these helpful and amazing collections.
First off, the ultra-generically-named blog, Photo Blog, has taken MSNBC's top 40 pictures of 2008 and made them much more presentable -- trust us, you do not want to sit through MSNBC's video version. Constraining themselves to only 40 pictures, MSNBC went the smart way and opted for beautiful and poingnent shots over trying to encapsulate the entire year with so few images.

We highly recommend you set aside a fair bit of time for the grand tour, though, The Boston Globe's 2008 in photographs -- all 120 of them. Don't worry, they've thoughtfully broken up the pictures into three collections of 40.Unlike the lower-quality MSNBC collection, TBG provides large lush imagery, opt-in warnings on any visceral imagery and doesn't impose a soundtrack. Also, with the extra eighty photos, they're able to put together a much more comprehensive and cohesive picture book -- mostly from an American angle -- of the momentous year we've just experienced together.
